Aurora teen was planning for college, but now has cancer

(AURORA, Ind.) – Rose Viers was expecting this summer to be filled with making memories with friends before heading to college.  

The 18-year-old Aurora native recently graduated from homeschool and was planning to attend Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. 

Everything changed during a recent medical appointment. 

“I had this whole plan and it all got blown up when 4 doctors came into the room and gave me the news,” Rose recalled. 

Rose was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and is now receiving treatment at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. 

Instead of preparing for college, she has spent her summer undergoing intensive chemotherapy and faces several more months of treatment ahead.

Rose is a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and the parishioners have rallied behind her by offering prayers and sending letters. 

“I try to send a daily letter to someone from the church to let them know that I am offering my sufferings up for them that day,” Rose told The 812. 

She added, “That has been a great way to get through some of the harder days, thank people for the support and stay close to God.” 

Community members may also know Rose from working as a waitress at 4 Speed on 50 in Lawrenceburg. She is also a devoted rugby player.

There will also be a fundraiser at Longnecks Sports Grill in Hebron from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, August 9. 

Guests simply need to mention “Rose’s fundraiser” to their server for a portion of their food purchase to be donated. There will also be raffles and silent auction items.
