(CONNERSVILLE, Ind.) – A man was arrested after a suspected burglary that led to an officer firing his service weapon in Connersville Thursday morning.
Officers responded around 8:30 a.m. to a home on 19th Street in reference to a burglary in progress.
Police say they located a man who ran from the scene toward Connersville Middle School.
“Officers gave chase at which point, the suspect produced what was believed to be a firearm and pointed it towards the officer. At that point, the officer perceived the immediate threat and discharged his service weapon,” the Connersville Police Department said.
Neither the suspect or the officer was struck by gunfire as a K-9 helped police take the person into custody.
The Indiana State Police has been contacted to conduct an independent investigation as the officer who fired the weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is protocol.
The incident led Connersville Middle School, Grandview Elementary and Little Spartan Preschool to go on a brief lockdown as a precaution.
"This was an isolated incident and there is no further perceived threat to the community at large," Connersville Police added.
