(GREENDALE, Ind.) – The City of Greendale is recognizing two people who saved the life of a mother and infant during a house fire.
The fire occurred at a home in the 300 block of Ridge Avenue on Sunday, March 15.
Matt Wuestefeld and his wife, Erin, happened to be driving by and noticed the smell of smoke.
The female had been asleep inside the house and was awaken by Matt knocking on the door.
He got both of them safely outside and then noticed her car in the driveway would prevent firefighter access to the home.
Matt went back into the burning home and got her keys, a baby carrier and a bottle. Matt also made sure the fire hydrants were accessible before firefighters arrived.

Greendale Mayor Vince Karsteter presented a proclamation recognizing Matt and Erin for their courageous and lifesaving actions on Wednesday.
“Matt and Erin demonstrated extraordinary courage and compassion in a moment of crisis. Their willingness to act without hesitation reflects the very best of our community. We are grateful for their example of service, bravery, and care for others,” Mayor Karsteter said.
The Greendale Police Department described the incident as an “extremely dangerous situation,” noting that the couple’s prompt response helped prevent what could have become a far greater tragedy.
