DCMH patient describes hip replacement experience

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – When Randy Baugh learned he needed a hip replacement, he wanted to get back to the life he enjoyed as quickly as possible, and he was ready to put in the work to make that happen.

Randy became the first patient at Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) to undergo and recover from a hip replacement using OrthoGrid®, advanced technology that assists surgeons during eligible anterior hip replacement procedures.

Most patients recovering from a total hip replacement participate in about six weeks of physical therapy, typically requiring 12 to 15 visits. Randy reached his goals in just eight visits over two and a half weeks.

"I went into surgery calm and confident because of the prayer support of family members, friends, and neighbors," Randy said. "I'd made up my mind that I was going to get through the surgery better than expected. My faith, my attitude, and the care I received all played a part in helping me recover faster."

By the time he completed therapy, he was walking without an assistive device, climbing stairs normally using a single handrail, and even returning to light yard work with short breaks.

Physical Therapist Emily Hirt, DPT, worked with Randy throughout his rehabilitation and saw firsthand how quickly he progressed.
