Former Batesville student signs professional soccer contract

A journey that began in Colombia

(DALLAS, TX.) – A former Batesville High School student just signed his first-ever professional soccer contract. 

17-year-old Nico Montoya was born in Colombia and immigrated to America with his mother, Bibiana, after she married Batesville native Dave Hooten. 

Nico was a standout soccer player in Batesville and eventually got the attention of the Major League Soccer club FC Dallas.

He was invited to attend FC Dallas Academy, which is a youth development program that also includes a regular high school curriculum.

After moving from Colombia years before, Bibiana made the decision to leave her home in Batesville so Nico could follow his dreams.

They arrived in Texas in 2021 and Nico has capitalized on every opportunity. 

The goaltender has earned numerous roster spots in amateur matches and was called up to the United States U17 Men’s National Team training camp last March. 

Montoya was also named to the FC Dallas preseason training camp roster in Algarve, Portugal.

He earned the title of a professional soccer player on Monday. 

Montoya was with his parents when he inked his name to a two-year MLS NEXT Pro Contract with North Texas SC on Monday.

“It felt like all my dreams were coming true in that moment. I felt like I had already been there because of how long I’ve dreamed of that exact moment,” Montoya told The 812.

Nico is also getting praise from his new head coach for his work ethic.

“I’m delighted for Nico that he’s earned this opportunity as a professional. I am confident that this will be the first of many contracts in his future,” North Texas SC head coach John Gall said.

As Nico celebrates his first professional contract, he has a message for young soccer players in Batesville who have big dreams. 

“This moment seemed so far away from me but I never stopped visualizing it and I ever stopped believing in myself. I think people need to learn, that with patience, complete dedication and faith, every single dream is within reach,” he said.
