(VEVAY, Ind.) – A former Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer has announced his candidacy for Switzerland County sheriff.
Steven Cheh served with the IMPD for 36 years and held roles in the operations field, investigations and training and supervising officers.
He has also led private sector security departments and is a graduate of Purdue University as well as the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
“I have firsthand knowledge of what works, what does not and what our community truly needs to be safe and secure. I am resolute, hardworking, and willing to listen and help in any way legally possible,” Cheh said.
He said the role of sheriff isn’t just about enforcing laws, but leading with integrity and compassion.
Cheh says he has prioritized community policing throughout his career, from relationships with citizens and businesses, to listening to concerns and addressing them before problems escalate.
“Treatment of everyone equally in the community is the most important way to build the connection, versus who you know, what they have done for me in the past and what they will do for me in the future,” he said.
Cheh says his priorities as sheriff will be accountability and transparency within the office, plus new initiatives to address mental health, drug abuse and crime prevention.
“Dedicated leadership as the Sheriff, but direct shift leadership throughout each day that puts people before politics, service before self. I will ensure leadership’s ability to do the right things, at the right time, for the right reasons. All supervisors will be collaborating with officers taking an initiative-taking response to accomplish the goals of the department,” he added.
Cheh added, “I have the experience, the vision, and the commitment to lead our Sheriff’s office into the future where all Switzerland County residents feel protected, respected, valued, informed, and listened to.”
Brian Morton currently serves as Switzerland County Sheriff and the Primary will be held in May.
