Goepper: I hope others can take inspiration from Olympic effort

(ITALY) – Lawrenceburg native Nick Goepper is sharing what led up to his crash during the Freeski Halfpipe competition on Friday.

Goepper entered the final run in Bronze position and says he could have taken the easy route or make history and go for Gold.

I knew that I could have played it safe, cleaned up my stock run, and medaled my 4th Olympics in a row. But I also knew that I had a brand new trick. A trick no one else in the world has done in a halfpipe and I’ve landed a total of 6 of them,” Goepper said.

While waiting his turn Goepper was thinking through what he would do.

“Is this a chance I want to take? What example do I want to set for the world to see. My dad would always tell me ‘You never want to say ‘I wish I would have,’” he added.

In front of the entire world, Goepper decided he would go the harder route and attempt a trick that has never been done in this competition.

“And I crashed big time. On the world's biggest stage. Literally pancaked, double ejection, yard sale, Grand Theft Auto WASTED,” Goepper said.

He added that he would have loved to win but hopes his effort is something that others can take inspiration from.

The three-time Olympic medal winner also hinted at possibly competing in the 2030 Winter Olympics in France.

“All we can do is pick back up, dust off, and move forward,” he said.
