Harrison teacher passes away, was former EC softball coach

(HARRISON, OH.) – A Harrison High School teacher suddenly passed away on Thursday.

Steve Coffman was a math teacher who suffered a cardiac emergency at school.

Coffman was a former East Central head softball coach who led the program from 2018 to 2023.

He had a combined record of 92-44 and led the program to three 20+ win seasons.

In Motion Sports Photography owner Sandy Mahoney described Coffman’s enthusiasm as “infectious” and said he was well-respected by the players.

Mahoney captured the above photo of Coffman celebrating a Trojans homerun in 2018.

Coffman has most recently served as a scorebook keeper during Trojans basketball games as well.

Sunman Dearborn Schools released a statement saying, "His impact extended far beyond the classroom, touching the lives of countless students, athletes, colleagues, and families."

The school added, "He was also a proud parent of both an East Central High School alumnus and a current student, and the spouse of one of our own teachers, further strengthening his connection to our school family."

He had also been a head basketball coach for South Dearborn and Harrison.

Coffman’s medical emergency led Harrison High School to dismiss early and cancel all evening activities. School will also be closed Friday.

His tenure at Southwest Local Schools

Coffman had worked for the school district since 2004 and had taught at both Harrison Junior School and William Henry Harrison High School.

“Beyond the classroom, he dedicated countless hours to students through coaching and mentorship, serving as an Assistant Coach for Cross Country at Harrison Junior School, Assistant Coach for Softball and Cross Country at the High School, and Head Boys Basketball Coach at the High School,” the school district stated.

The district added, “Steve was known for his steady presence, passion for education, and unwavering commitment to students. He built meaningful relationships with both students and colleagues and was deeply respected for the patience, knowledge, and encouragement he brought to those around him.”

While classes are cancelled Friday, the school will be open for any students and staff members who wish to gather. Counselors and community support resources will be available from 9 am. to noon.

“In addition, supports will also be in place at Harrison High School when classes resume on Monday,” the district added.
