(MADISON, Ind.) – Multiple fire departments are on the scene of a major fire at a historic church in downtown Madison on Monday night.
The fire is occurring at Trinity United Methodist Church which was built in 1873. It is located near the intersection of Main and Broadway streets.
It broke out around 7 p.m. and witness video showed at least one portion of the roof collapsed around 8:30 p.m.
"It is black in downtown Madison right now from all the smoke. I don't think there is anyway they can save the church," a witness said.
One witness says the fire was caused by an electric golf cart parked near the church that had exploded. That has not been confirmed by officials.
Witnesses added that some nearby residents have been evacuated and it is not believed anybody has been hurt.
Madison resident Jessie Melton-Watson is live streaming the fire and you can watch here.
This is a developing story and more information will be shared when it becomes available.
