Hundreds get tar on tires in S.R. 46 construction zone in Batesville

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – Hundreds of drivers ended up with tar on their tires after driving through the State Road 46 construction zone in Batesville Tuesday.

It happened in the westbound lanes between Tekulve Road and State Road 229 and several drivers told us that there were no signs or cones that indicated they shouldn’t drive on the recently-placed pavement.

The situation led to a handful of semis being stranded while some passenger vehicles suffered significant wheel damage.

The incident happened as an Indiana Department of Transportation contractor is conducting a repaving project between Huntersville Road and Merkel Road. You can read our initial report by clicking this link.

Did you get tar on your tires?

While a minimal amount of tar can be harmless, an excessive amount could lead to vehicle handling issues and imbalance, traction loss, and chunks of asphalt chipping your car’s paint.

We encourage you to talk with your local mechanic if you are unsure, or notice a large amount of tar or your vehicle-handling being abnormal.
