'I appreciate this community:' South Decatur senior reflects on journey to 1,000 points

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – South Decatur senior Drake Scaggs was recognized in front of his friends, family and fans last night for a milestone achievement on the court.

Scaggs reached 1,000 career points during the Cougars 79-41 win over Oldenburg Academy last week.

The school presented him with a ceremonial ball last night ahead of the game against Brown County.

Scaggs described it as an honor to be recognized in front of the home crowd and was humbled by the reception he received.

“Seeing all the people that have supported me, to go out of their way to celebrate an accomplishment I achieved, it can really make you appreciate the people around you,” Scaggs told The 812.

His success has come from hours upon hours in the gym while also taking advantage of the opportunities he's been given.

“I’m extremely blessed and grateful for the ability to play this sport and even more blessed and grateful to be able to have these people around supporting me," he said.

He added, "This was a very cool and humbling experience. It’s just a reflection of a lot of time and effort poured into a sport, and getting the opportunity to hit an achievement of that sort just makes me love the game even more."

After the ceremony, Scaggs and the Cougars rolled past Brown County with a 69-50 win.

The senior is planning to study psychology and also hopes to earn an EMT/ Paramedic certification as well.
