(LAKE MCCOY, Ind.) – Officials confirm that there is no current threat to the public when it comes to the Lake McCoy Dam.
There are structural issues with the dam and a controlled release of water began on Sunday morning.
During the storms Sunday night, the National Weather Service issued a statement that there was a dam failure.
Decatur County EMA Director Michael Snyder said that statement was incorrect.
“The Lake McCoy Dam is still undergoing its controlled release. There is no imminent threat to public safety at this time,” Snyder said.
State Road 46 in that area was closed for a short period of time but has since reopened.
The controlled release of water is part of the mitigation efforts and will continue until the lake reaches a target elevation determined by engineers.
"There is no immediate danger to the public at this time; however, conditions can change, and residents should remain prepared to act if emergency notifications are issued," Snyder reiterated
