Letts VFD to discontinue 4-H fair fish fry after 43 years

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – The Letts Community Volunteer Fire Department has announced that they will no longer host their fish fry during the Decatur County Fair. 

The department has been a staple at the county fair by serving fish and tenderloins since 1983. 

“Due to several factors, including the increasing challenges associated with staffing and operating the event, the department has determined that it is no longer feasible to continue the fish fry at the fair,” the agency announced. 

Letts is not immune to an issue impacting fire departments across the country, which is the lowering numbers of volunteers. 

They added that the rising food costs also contributed to their decision. 

“Balancing the demands of emergency response, training, fundraising, and family commitments has made it increasingly difficult to sustain an operation of this size during the fair,” the agency added.

Letts Chief Matt Morrow said the department is grateful the volunteers and community members who have supported the fish fry for the past 43 years.

The department is currently evaluating dates and opportunities to host fish fries and other community events at the firehouse.

 "While our time at the fair has come to an end, we look forward to continuing to serve the community and creating new traditions at the fire station. We hope everyone will join us when we announce future fish fries and community events,” Morrow said.
