(VERSAILLES, Ind.) – Concerns are rising over the future of the lake at Versailles State Park.
A growing number of community members believe the lake could eventually disappear due to several factors including a lack of adequate funding and maintenance.
An online petition has been launched that urges the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to fund proper maintenance of the dam and dredging of the lake.
The petition asks, “Why has Versailles State Park gone decades without funding to maintain the dam or dredge the lake?”
“Continued delay risks turning a maintenance issue into a permanent loss. The longer the lake goes without investment, the easier it becomes for leaders to frame removal as the only practical option,” organizers said.
Organizers added that the lake is suffering from neglect due to insufficient or reallocated funds.
“This neglect is leading to long-term ecological damage, aging facilities, and decline in tourist interest, adversely impacting local businesses and the community at large,” they said.
