Man accused in deadly crash was arrested on meth charges this weekend

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – A Moores Hill man has been charged in connection to a crash that killed a Milan couple this summer.

Jordan and Sierra Walters, both 33, were killed when a pickup crossed the centerline on State Road 350 and struck their vehicle on June 12. Their two young sons were also injured in the crash but survived. 

The driver of the other vehicle has been identified as 46-year-old Steven Witte and he also sustained serious injuries in the crash.

On Tuesday, Dearborn County prosecutors announced that tests of Witte’s blood allegedly revealed that he had methamphetamine, amphetamine, buprenorphine, and norbuprenorphine in his system at the time of the crash. 

He has been charged with 8 counts related to the tragic crash.

However, this is not the first time this week that Witte has been arrested.

Witte was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over by an Indiana State Trooper on Friday night. Police say Witte was arrested on a charge of Possession of over 10 grams of Methamphetamine.  

Dearborn County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens has called the June crash an unimaginable tragedy and credited the Walters’ 6-year-old son who sought help after the crash. 

Despite being injured himself, the 6-year-old climbed out of the wrecked vehicle, made his way under the guardrail, and reached the roadway to seek help for his parents and younger brother.

“No criminal charge can restore what this family has lost or erase the pain these children and their loved ones will carry. Our responsibility now is to pursue accountability carefully, thoroughly, and with the seriousness this case demands,” Deddens said.

An initial hearing was held Tuesday and his bond was set at $1M surety for this past weekend's methamphetamine possession charge. A bond of $5 million cash-only was also set for the case involving the crash.
