(NAPOLEON, Ind.) – Several pews at Saint John Lutheran Church in Napoleon were covered with handmade quilts on Sunday morning.
Those quilts were made by some members of the church and will soon be used to comfort sick children.
The Napoleon church got involved last summer with the local chapter of Quilts for Kids, which is a national organization dedicated to making quilts for children who are facing serious illnesses.
Elrod resident Teresa Meyer created the local chapter in 2016 which has delivered more than 1,400 quilts to local hospitals, local fire departments, Cincinnati Children’s and Riley Children’s Health.
On Sunday morning, the Saint John Lutheran quilters brought in approximately 75 handmade quilts into church that will eventually be distributed by Meyer’s chapter.
“We put a lot of time into this because we know these children are local to our area and it means so much to them and their families that someone else cares for them that much,” said quilter Martha Peetz.
Sandra Bowlus was among many others who donated her homemade quilts Sunday and said, “It also means a lot that the children get to take the quilts home from the hospital and keep them forever.”
The group got involved with the local Quilts for Kids initiative thanks to a grant from the Ripley County Community Foundation. Altogether, the church has made about 160 quilts since joining last June.
The Saint John Lutheran members meet on the first Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the church to quilt the blankets.
They could use donations of quilting cotton and you make donations by contacting the church or dropping it off there at 8903 Versailles Street in Napoleon.
