Residents along Whitewater River urged to evacuate

(METAMORA, Ind.) – Franklin County officials are urging residents near low-lying areas of the Whitewater River to evacuate or find higher ground over the next few hours.

Officials are especially urging people in the Metamora or Cedar Grove areas to find higher ground.

Significant flooding is expected along the Whitewater River beginning around 2 p.m. 

“Typical flood stage is 17 feet and we are expecting nearly 22 feet on the river,” said Franklin County EMA director Amy Lindsey. 

Here is a statement from the Dearborn County Sheriffs Office:

Attention residents of Northern Dearborn County. The following information was just received by our office.

We are expecting significant flooding along the Whitewater River this afternoon and evening.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is advising that the Whitewater River is expected to reach approximately 21.8 feet around 2:00 PM today, compared to a normal flood stage of 17 feet.

The river is rising rapidly, and the water is expected to move toward the West Harrison area and impact portions of Northern Dearborn County.

Please stay alert, monitor local weather and emergency updates, and avoid flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown. Please take the necessary precautions and stay safe.
