Metamora: Flood waters not as strong as town's resilience

(METAMORA, Ind.) – Connie Cole is one of the many Metamora residents who are beginning the cleanup process after the historic flooding. 

Cole has lived in Metamora for about 10 years and is not only a homeowner but also has two businesses in town. 

She owns Connie’s Cabin which features home decor, jewelry, glassware, books, vintage items and other accessories. 

She also has Connie’s Cottage which serves as a bed and breakfast. 

The cleanup is just getting underway and Connie won’t be forced to do it alone.

Catrina Campbell lives north of the canal in Metamora and didn't experience any flooding. 

Campbell is one of the many residents who have been volunteering their time to help their affected neighbors. 

She spent time helping Connie assess the damage in both her home and businesses on Friday. 

“The phone has been ringing off the hook and everybody is running around town asking others what they need and how they can help,” Campbell said. 

While the Whitewater River took a toll on the community, both Catrina and Connie say the town’s resilience is stronger than those flood waters. 

“All the volunteering and people helping their neighbors is what happens with little communities like this, when an outside force hits, we just hook arms and do our thing,” Campbell said. 

The town is rallying together and they all know that the recovery process will be long for some residents. 

“We’re tough and stubborn and we’re the type of people that will get it done. It doesn’t matter if somebody doesn’t have a bra or some guy doesn’t have teeth, we’re helping everybody,” Campbell said.

She added, “A little place like Metamora, we will bounce back and bounce back together.”

Connie added that one thing that has assisted her so far is her strong faith. 

“God has his finger in all of this and we know it’s going to be okay. This flood is bigger than us, but it's not bigger than God,” Connie shared.
