(MILAN, Ind.) – A Milan police officer saved a life during a fire on Wednesday morning.
Milan Town Marshal Terry Wilson was among the first responders who responded to an apartment fire on Maple Street around 6 a.m.
Wilson arrived and kicked in the door and was able to pull a woman from the burning apartment.
“If Terry didn’t do what he did, we would have dealt with a far worse situation and there would have likely been a fatality this morning,” said Milan Fire Chief Rod Johnson.
That woman was then taken to a hospital where she is recovering today.
Johnson describes Wilson’s actions as heroic and said this serves as another example of the work first responders do in Milan on a daily basis.
“Our local law enforcement is just as important as our fire department. We work close and hand-in-hand and this morning is a prime example of law enforcement being there for our citizens,” Johnson said.
We spoke with Wilson who said he isn't seeking any special recognition.
"To me, it's just part of the job. I know people are tossing around the term hero, however, I don't think anyone who works as a police officer looks at themselves that way," Wilson told The 812.
He added that the Milan Fire Department and the other responding agencies deserve just as much credit as him.
Milan firefighters were assisted by the Delaware Community Volunteer Fire Department, Ripley County EMS and Ripley County Communications.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire shortly after the rescue and nobody else was hurt nor was there any significant property damage.
