More local cases of cyclosporiasis confirmed

(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) – The number of cases of cyclosporiasis continues to rise in Indiana. 

There have been 684 cases documented by the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) since May 1. 

Locally, there have been cases documents in several counties:

• Jefferson County – 11 cases 

• Ripley County - 3 cases 

• Dearborn County - 1 case

• Rush County - 2 cases 

  
  

These numbers were reported by IDOH Thursday which added that patients range in age from 8 to 98. 

Cyclosporiasis is a foodborne parasitic illness that health officials say can lead to “diarrhea with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements.”

Other symptoms include loss of appetite or weight loss, stomach cramping or bloating, fatigue, increased gas, nausea and fatigue, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

“The source of many of these cases has not yet been identified. The IDOH continues to work with local, state and federal public health partners to identify possible sources," state health officials said. 

Previous outbreaks of Cyclosporiasis in the United States have been linked to bagged salad mixes and kits, fresh herbs such as cilantro and basil, raspberries, green onions and other fresh produce.  

“Most people with healthy immune systems will recover without treatment. Contact a healthcare provider for testing and treatment if you are experiencing gastrointestinal illness, such as severe diarrhea. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics, and it is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids while experiencing diarrhea,” IDOH stated.
