Morris teenager creates free haunted house that opens this weekend

Watch a preview here:

(MORRIS, Ind.) – You won’t find a garage in Southeast Indiana that's as scary as the one 14-year-old Chase Schutte has decorated.

The East Central freshman has found a passion for creating haunted experiences during the Halloween season.

In 2023, he was just 12-years-old when he created a Haunted Trail near his family’s home.

The first two years were just for family and friends but now the 14-year-old is inviting the community.

He has spent the past five weeks transforming the family’s garage into a haunted maze.

“This year it is a lot longer, darker and scarier than previous years,” Schutte said.

Schutte not only designed the haunted house but has also put entrepreneurial skills to work as he is responsible for recruiting and scheduling workers.

His friends and little sisters are both involved as the cast and have assisted him in the construction.

This is a family-friendly experience and attendees, especially those with little kids, can ask for the “No Scare” option if they are easily frightened.

However, for those who like frights, this is among the best you’ll find in the area!

“Chase is very creative and has a great imagination when it comes to Halloween and created this at the age of 12 totally on his own,” said his mother, Julie Schutte. “While we help with some minor things, he does the majority of the work and gets all the credit and he improves it every year.”

Chase added that his love for haunted houses began because his grandmother would take him to those experiences.

“My grandma was a huge part of it and we’d always do this on vacations and stuff, and it is just sad that she’s not here to see it,” he explained.
