National: Regional jet, military helicopter collide in Washington, D.C.

Update:

Recovery efforts are continuing Thursday as 64 people on the jet and 4 on the military helicopter are all feared dead.


There were several members of the U.S. Figure Skating National Development Team that onboard the plane.


Original Report:

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – A  search and rescue operation is underway in Washington, D.C. after a mid-air collision on Wednesday night. 


The FAA has confirmed that the collision involves an American Airlines regional jet and a military Blackhawk helicopter. 


The crash occurred near the Potomac River around 9 p.m. when the jet was on approach to Reagan National Airport. 


There are reports that the commercial jet was flying in from Wichita, Kansas.


The video above is from a webcam on the Kennedy Center that appears to show two aircraft colliding mid-air.


All flights have been stopped at Reagan National as a result of the crash.
