New Alsace WWII veteran celebrates 100th birthday on Saturday

(NEW ALSACE, Ind.) – A World War II veteran celebrated a milestone birthday with family, friends, fellow veterans and community members this weekend. 

George Lingg turned 100 on Friday and a birthday party was held at the New Alsace American Legion on Saturday.

Fellow WWII veteran George Klopp, as well as Korean War veteran Roy Anderson, both stopped by the party. 

Lingg and Klopp are two of only four WWII veterans still living in Dearborn County. The other two are Clarence Cook and JC Lewis, who were unable to attend. 

Meanwhile, PG Gentrup and Nick Ullrich from the Vietnam Veterans Lary D. Fogle Chapter 71 in Aurora were in attendance for the party as well as Faith and Ken Jones from the Brookville American Legion. 

Others in attendance included Tessa and Raya Ziegler, the two sisters who have raised more than $20K for veterans to attend Honor Flights, stopped by with their mother. 

Fr. Jonathan Meyer from All Saints and Batesville resident Tim Keiffer, who placed the flags around the Legion building, were also in attendance. There were many more people in attendance as well! 

Lingg is a Navy veteran who served in the Pacific during the Second World War. 

After the military, he and his wife, Dorothy, had three daughters, six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. 

George worked at Schenley Distillery and retired from Monsanto. He is a lifetime member of the New Alsace American Legion, St. Paul’s Catholic Church and previously served in the Honor Guard.
