New organization dedicated to helping special needs runners

Will host inaugural event on July 4

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – A new non-profit organization is dedicated to providing running gear to special needs athletes.

Every Sole Counts was created by Batesville resident Curtis Gillman and a running group called What The Hill Running Club.

The running club hosted a 5K in 2023 when they met two runners who live with disabilities.

“Friendships quickly formed, and before long, Luke and Isaac began joining our club for weekly group runs. As they became regular members, they started inviting some of their friends who also live with disabilities,” Gillman said.

The group noticed that the runners lacked quality running shoes and other essential gear. A few members of the group went shopping to help one athlete purchase new shoes.

“The sheer joy and pride this athlete felt from having a great pair of running shoes sparked an idea—one that would become Every Sole Counts,” Gillman said.

Every Sole Counts empowers Special Needs Athletes by providing access to high-quality running gear that meets their individual needs.

“We believe that every athlete, regardless of their abilities or financial situation, deserves the opportunity to excel in their sport with confidence and comfort,” Gillman added.

Ever Sole Counts will host “Four on the Fourth” which will be a 4-mile run/walk in Batesville on July 4.

“The course begins at Liberty Park, continues through beautiful Brum Woods, back past Liberty Park through The Plex and Bill Gillespie Soccer Park towards the YMCA and then back to Liberty Park for the finish,” organizers said.

They will also host a costume contest for the most patriotic costume and a raffle with proceeds benefiting Every Sole Counts.

Runners and walkers of all abilities are encouraged to participate and proceeds will help provide running gear to those with special needs.
