North Vernon police save man after suicide attempt

(VERNON, Ind.) – A man is alive today after the quick actions by police officers in downtown Vernon.
Two North Vernon officers responded to a report of a suicidal man on Friday morning.
The officers found a man who was soaking wet and showing signs of severe cold exposure.
“The male stated he had attempted to end his life by jumping into the river,” the department stated.
With temperatures near 20 degrees, officers immediately provided assistance and ensured he received emergency medical care.
The North Vernon Police Department is using this incident to remind others that help is available.
“The holiday season can be an incredibly difficult time for many people. If you are struggling, please know that there are resources, and there is help available. No one needs to face these challenges alone,” said Chief Keith Messer.
