(LAUREL, Ind.) – Longtime Laurel resident Shirlie Mauzy came up with an idea several years ago to have a veterans memorial in town.
On Saturday, her idea became reality as the community came together to dedicate the Laurel Veterans Memorial at Conwell Cemetery.
The fire department draped a large American flag as several dignitaries spoke to the large crowd about the importance of the memorial.
The ceremony began with an opening prayer by Pastor Duane Harrison and he was followed by a speech from Tom Miller, an Air Force veteran who served from 1969-1973 and from 1980-1996.
Franklin County Veterans Service Officer Shirley May also spoke and said the new memorial ensures the sacrifice and service of local veterans will never be forgotten.

“When people drive through Laurel years from now, they’ll see this memorial. They may also stop to read the names engraved on these pavers, but what they won’t immediately see are the thousands of acts of courage, sacrifice, and service that are represented here.”
State Senator Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) also provided remarks and shared how Franklin County has the 7th largest veterans population of any Indiana county.
“According to the census, Franklin County is currently home to 1,594 veterans which represents 9 percent of our county’s population,” Sen. Leising said.
She also shared information about a new law that provides property tax relief to disabled veterans. Totally disabled veterans are now eligible for 100 percent deduction on their property taxes. Other eligible veterans are also eligible for property tax credits. Read more here.
Saturday’s ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute and TAPS. The Laurel Veterans Memorial was made possible through donations, grants and volunteers.
You can visit the memorial at Conwell Cemetery which is located on West High Street.
