Project T3 to provide more than 1,000 backpacks to foster kids

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – It’s the busiest time of year for a nonprofit that helps foster children with school supplies. 

Totes for Tots and Teens (Project T3) provides a backpack with school supplies to foster kids in more than a dozen counties in the region. 

Volunteers have been working long hours to ensure each backpack has items such as a folder, notepads, a binder, pencils, pens and crayons. 

More than 1,000 of the backpacks will be provided to foster kids over the next week. 

Bea Thompson and Millie Spielmann are incoming freshmen at Oldenburg Academy and they both volunteered with the nonprofit on Monday.

“It’s been really fun to do this and it is nice to help Project T3 and help them out,” Thompson said. 

There have also been numerous other adult volunteers along with groups from Baxter and KKF (formally Global Atlantic).

The backpacks and school supplies are sent to foster kids in Ripley, Dearborn, Ohio, Jefferson, Switzerland, Jennings, Scott, Jackson, Decatur, Shelby, Bartholomew, Fayette, Union, Rush, Franklin, and Johnson Counties.

The Batesville-based nonprofit also provides overnight bags for foster kids to transport their belongings. 

Inside the bag they are also given a few age-appropriate personal items that might make the transition a little easier for them. 

“Until we were established, foster children in the Southeastern Indiana area were given a garbage bag to put their belongings in when being removed from their home,” the organization said.
