(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congresswoman Erin Houchin (R-District 9) has introduced bipartisan legislation that would hold colleges accountable when students are broadly unable to repay their loans
The Student Protection and Success Act would increase accountability for universities, improve student loan repayment outcomes, and ensure colleges deliver real value for students and taxpayers.
The bill would prohibit federal aid programs going to college where 15 percent or less of students are on track to repay their loans. It would also create a program that would reward colleges that effectively educate significant low-income student populations .
Rep. Houchin introduced the bill alongside a Democrat representative from Washington. A companion bill is being led in the Senate by Indiana Senator Todd Young and New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen.
“This bipartisan bill brings long-overdue accountability to our higher education system by ensuring colleges have an actual stake in student success. If colleges are benefiting from federal dollars, they should be delivering measurable results and putting students on a path to succeed after graduation.”
