(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congresswoman Erin Houchin (R-District 9) is making a push to protect children and teens online.
Several bills she is leading were discussed during a legislative subcommittee hearing in the House of Representatives this week.
The subcommittee reviewed 19 bills which included four that are led by Rep. Houchin.
One of those is the ‘The AWARE Act’ which addresses AI chatbot companions, and would direct the FTC to provide parents, educators, and kids with clear guidance on how these bots work, the risks they pose, and how to stay safe.
Another one of Houchin’s bills would prohibit chatbots from impersonating licensed professionals and require clear disclosure when a child is interacting with AI.
Houchin also drafted the ‘RESET Act’ which would require platforms to default minors into safer settings, limit addictive and harmful algorithmic content, and give parents stronger oversight tools.
She also co-led a bipartisan bill with a Massachusetts congressman that would close the loophole that allows kids to bypass age limits by requiring app stores and developers to d share responsibility for age assurance and blocking high-risk content for minors.
“Kids are growing up in an online world that is changing faster than any parent can keep up with,” said Rep. Houchin. These bills all share one goal—putting families back in control. Whether we’re addressing AI chatbots, addictive algorithms, or better age protections, this is about putting the wellbeing of kids first.”
The hearing marked a step toward Congress considering comprehensive reforms to address risks posed by social media platforms, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies.
