(RISING SUN, Ind.) – A longtime police officer is being remembered on the seventh anniversary of his passing.

49-year-old David Hewitt died after a vehicle crash on icy roads in Switzerland County on February 13, 2019.

Hewitt grew up in Rising Sun and had a 27-year law enforcement career.

He had worked at the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office, Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office and Lawrenceburg Police Department before joining his hometown agency, the Rising Sun Police Department in 1998.

He was named Rising Sun Police Chief in 2004 and held the role until he had passed away.

Hewitt was known for the loyalty and love he had for the people of Southeast Indiana.

“His loyalty to his small corner of the world is unrivaled. David spent the majority of his life working to make Rising Sun a better place to live and raise children. He loves this town and the people who make it home,” his family stated.

Outside of work, he was an avid outdoorsman and was a devoted father.

David worked tirelessly to give his children the best childhood. He taught them the value of trust, the importance of humility and respect, and instilled in them a love of the outdoors,” stated his family.
