Scammers target family members of local inmates

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Families who have loved ones incarcerated are being warned about a scam. 

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department says the scam targets family members of inmates. 

“Individuals are using publicly available inmate information to contact family members while falsely representing themselves as Sheriff's Department or Detention Center personnel,” the department said

The scammers request credit card information or money to purchase monitors and other equipment. 

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies will never contact people asking for money to make purchases. 

“Anyone receiving such a call should immediately disconnect and contact the Decatur County Sheriff's Department directly using its publicly listed telephone number to verify the legitimacy of the contact,” they added.
