Sinkhole opens on U.S. 50 and S.R. 129 intersection

(MILAN, Ind.) – A sinkhole has formed at the intersection of U.S. 50 and State Road 129 near Versailles. 


Officials were called to the intersection around 4 p.m. Thursday after the sinkhole developed on eastbound U.S. 50. 


It is located in the right turn lane and emergency lane for drivers turning on County Road 400 East. 


The 4-foot sinkhole was caused by a drainage culvert that was clogged up and got washed out due to the heavy rains overnight.


The Indiana Department of Transportation is on scene and are filling up the sinkhole with rock. 


That area of the road will be closed off throughout the weekend until engineers can assess the situation on Monday. The rest of the roadway and State Road 129 remain open.
