(COLUMBIA, SC) – The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned the convictions in a high profile murder case from 2023.
Alex Murdaugh was convicted of shooting and killing his wife Maggie and son Paul. He was sentenced to two life terms in prison.
The Murdaugh defense team argued in February that a court clerk exercised "improper external influences" during the trial.
They argued that the clerk attempted to insert herself into the jury deliberations and made improper comments about the case.
On Wednesday, the state supreme court unanimously overturned those murder convictions and Murdaugh will be re-tried for the crimes.
The case has been remanded to a lower court an the South Carolina Attorney General’s office will have to decide whether to move forward with a new trial.
