South Dearborn helps Rising Sun Schools following storms

(RISING SUN, Ind.) – The South Dearborn School Corporation is stepping up to help a neighboring district following the severe storms. 

The storms caused a large power outage in Rising Sun that could last for the next few days. 

The Rising Sun school system is among those without power and it raised concerns due to the amount of frozen food that is stored there. 

“I reached out to the superintendents of Lawrenceburg and South Dearborn and asked if they had any freezer space. Both said they did and they offered to store the food,” said Rising Sun Superintendent Branden Roeder. 

Two truckloads full of food were loaded up on Thursday and transported to South Dearborn Middle School. 

Roeder and his son, Joey, were in one truck while school HVAC specialist Ron LeWellyn drove the other. 

South Dearborn Middle School principal Grant Schiering, along with custodians Jennifer Lohmiller and Debbie Jefferson were at the school and helped carry all the food in. 

Roeder added that Schiering, who just recently was named principal, showed up at the school on his off-day to help. He also applauded the custodians as well.

“We are very blessed with school corporations around us and the great relationships we all have together. When anybody is in need of something the other superintendents and schools are quick to help out,” Roeder said. 

The temporary donation of freezer space has saved Rising Sun Schools thousands of dollars, Roeder said.
