She gives credit to the Opening Knights and the Combo Band
(AURORA, Ind.) –South Dearborn has won two straight competitions when it comes to music.
They're led by Maddy Burress who beat out 44 other singers to win the Best Soloist during the Beavercreek Midwest Show Choir Classic last weekend.
She earned a spot in the solo competition during the show choir performance. Her group, Opening Knights and Overtones also won their division.
“I was shocked to win, it was so surreal but it was even more exciting that we won as a group together. It’s one thing to have personal success but to share it with your group is otherworldly,” Burress said.
This isn’t the first time Burress has earned an individual trophy.
She earned two Outstanding Performer Awards, two Best Soloist competitions and more than 10 Best Female Soloist awards.
One award that stands out for her is when she won Best Soloist during an Opening Knight competition in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
However, she says the best part of winning is being able to share it with her friends.
“I don’t think it would feel the same if we weren’t such a close group and it wouldn’t feel the same if I didn’t have their support,” she said.
“It’s fun to have your name announced, but it’s even better to turn around and see all your friends happy for you and celebrating,” Burress added.

The junior is focused on some upcoming Opening Knight performances, but is taking some time to think about her future.
Burress says she has an interest in musical theater or directing. However, she isn’t fully sure just yet.
Opening Knight and Overtones are back in action Saturday with a competition in Batesville.
Burress also wants to give credit to the Combo Band, which is the group of students who play the music during the show choir performances.
“They work just as hard if not harder than the singers and dancers, and without them, we would literally be a no-show at performances. A lot of our success belongs to the band,” Burress added.
