(URBANA, ILL.) – A South Ripley graduate is being recognized at the University of Illinois.

Deborah Murphy was accepted into the Veterinary Medicine of Illinois program earlier this year.

She joined the program after graduating from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in May, where she was also a cross country athlete and cheerleader.

The Illinois Veterinary Medicine School said Murphy is engaging in clinical areas of veterinary practice rather than attending lectures and laboratories.

Murphy currently serves as Vice President of her class and is also one of the ambassador caretakers of the Wildlife Medical Center.

“There are countless clubs and activities to get involved in, which makes it easy to find your people. I’ve joined several organizations that match my passions, like the Surgery Club, Feline Club, Shelter Medicine Club, and Aquatics Club,” Murphy told The 812.

After graduation, Murphy must also pass state and national board examinations covering knowledge of companion and food animal medicine in order to become licensed to practice.

The Illinois Veterinary Medicine School sent out an email to recognize Murphy for her success so far this year.

“I would like to thank my grandmother Audrey Gallant, my great aunt Ruby Shnuck,, my aunt Liz Powers, my uncles Kelly Powers and Marc Einhaus and Ethan DeHamer and your entire family for believing in me,” she added.
