St. Teresa's in Bright continues tradition of blessing cars

Watch here:

(BRIGHT, Ind.) – A Catholic church in Bright continued their new tradition of blessing vehicles on Sunday morning.

St. Teresa’s Benedicta of the Cross began this tradition last year. It's also taken place at other parishes across the globe.

It's held in accordance with St. Elijah’s Day which celebrates the Prophet Elijah who was carried up into heaven on a chariot.

“We therefore bless our vehicles in his memory, praying that our own “chariots” might also be part of our daily journey into the kingdom of heaven,” said Fr. Jonathan Meyer.

Following today’s Mass, Fr. Meyer went on a truck-mounted lift and blessed 121 cars, trucks and other vehicles as they drove underneath.

Just as important, however, we pray that we be kept safe in our earthly journeys through the coming year, so that we might ever thank and glorify our God who has granted us the means to transport ourselves safely,” Fr. Meyer added.

Derrick Batta serves on the parish leadership team for St. Teresa’s and provided the images and photos.

Batta added that the parish is working to cultivate their Carmelite roots, because St. Teresa Benedicta was a Carmelite Nun who died at the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the prophet Elijah is credited with the beginnings of the Carmelites.
