(PHOENIX) – Alisha Detmer never felt that being from a small town was an excuse for not following her goals.
The 2022 Switzerland County graduate has gone on to have a successful career as a triathlon athlete at Northern Kentucky University.
“If anything, coming from a smaller town has helped me reach my goals because of all the love and support that I had on my journey,” Detmer said.
She is one of just 220 female collegiate athletes from across the nation who qualified for the Women’s Triathlon National Championship in Arizona this weekend.
The race consisted of a one-lap 750m lake swim, a three-lap 20km bike course, and a two-lap 5km run near the campus of Arizona State University.
She completed the intense challenge, finishing 120th, and described it as a blessing to have the opportunity.
“I want to thank the Lord for this experience. I want young girls who aspire to be like me to see me and see Jesus. I want them to understand that I compete to glorify the Lord with the talent he gave me,” Detmer said.
She hopes that young athletes from Switzerland County, and across the region, can be motivated by her hard work and drive.
“I would tell them, don’t be me, be yourself; therefore, use my accomplishments as motivation and drive to know that if I can do it, you can do it,” she said.
She is majoring in Biochemistry at NKU and hopes to become a trauma nurse after graduation.
