Town Marshal who was killed also umpired local games

(LYNN, Ind.) – A veteran police officer in eastern Indiana was killed while attempting to apprehend a suspect during a police chase on Wednesday. 

The pursuit in Randolph County began this morning when a deputy spotted a van that matched the description of a stolen vehicle.

The pursuit was taking place on U.S. 36 and approaching the town of Lynn. 

Lynn Town Marshal Bradley Fisher positioned himself ahead of the pursuit in an attempt to deploy a tire deflation device. 

Fisher was struck by the suspect’s vehicle and was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

Fisher was with the Lynn Police Department for 27 years and had also served as a baseball umpire. 

Franklin County teacher and coach Brandon Cowen said Fisher would usually umpire at least one EIAC baseball game a year. 

Brandon also got to know the police officer well because Fisher and Cowen's uncle were close friends. Brandon even joined them one time for a Cubs game in Chicago.

“Words can’t describe how great of a person Brad was. He was a great father, husband, umpire, role model, friend, and all around great man. Prayers to the Fisher family. I know he and Uncle Monte are talking about Cubs Baseball and just enjoying being together,” Cowen said. 

South Dearborn football coach Rand Ballart is another local who had the chance to get to know Fisher. The two umpired a game at Rushville this past spring. 

“This is absolutely heartbreaking news and he was one of the best humans I have ever been around,” Ballart said. 

He added, “Brad worked the 3A State championship game and he was so proud to have that opportunity. I will never forget that Brad gave me one of his IHSAA plate hats for me to wear during my first sectional assignment this year and I will cherish this and wear in his memory.”

The pursuit suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Maci Marquelle Atkinson, of Winchester, who was taken into custody a short time later.
