Two who served in Vietnam to be honored this weekend

(LAWRENCEBURG, Ind.) – Two local men who served in Vietnam will be honored during the Lawrenceburg Fall Fest on Saturday.

Donald Ray Henry grew up in Dillsboro and was a standout athlete. He was named his high school’s class president in 1966. 

Following graduation, he and his friends decided to join the Army. He was 19-years-old when he made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam on September 6, 1967. 

Don is remembered for being an “All-American Guy” and enlisted to serve right after graduating from Dillsboro High School. 

“His classmates never forgot him and thirty years after his  death, they added a new tombstone to go along with his military marker,” said Vietnam veteran PG Gentrup. 

76-year-old Gene Scholl was deployed to Vietnam in 1969 and was wounded by a grenade. After the service, Scholl worked for the USPS for many years including being an interim postmaster at Milan, Dillsboro and Moores Hill. 

He and his wife, Virginia, have three daughters and three grandchildren. 

Both Henry and Scholl will be recognized at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The festival will also honor four veterans who recently laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier along with the Indiana Patriot Guard Southeast Region.
