Volunteers conduct 17 projects on Day of Caring in Decatur Co.

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Nearly 80 people participated in Decatur County United Fund’s (DCUF) annual Day of Giving last week. 

It was a combination of students and adults who volunteered their time to conduct meaningful service projects across the county. 

High school students got involved with North Decatur being led by student director Jayden Lawrence and South Decatur led by student director Taylor Somers. 

Greensburg High School will conduct their service project later this fall and will be led by student Addi Bennett. 

Local companies that volunteered their time included First Financial Bank, Delta Faucet, GECOM Corporation, RBSK Partners, Steel Technologies, JC Bank, and Centra Credit Union. 

Blaire Hornberger recently became the DCUF executive director and described her first Day of Caring as inspiring. 

“I am incredibly proud of our Student Directors—Taylor, Addi, and Jayden—who put in extra effort to organize their teams and lead with such maturity and heart. Their dedication sets the tone for the entire event,” Hornberger said. 

She added, “I’m equally grateful for our Board Members, Tony McLaughlin, Angie Reynolds, and Nick Wallpe, who rallied their groups and made sure every project had the support it needed. Their leadership reflects the best of who we are as a community.”

These are the nonprofits that benefitted from the volunteer support on Day of Caring:

• Greensburg Community Bread of Life

• Decatur County Family YMCA

• Decatur County Youth Baseball

• Greensburg Adult Center

• Greensburg Decatur County Animal Shelter

• Head Start, Historical Society of Decatur County

• Letts Volunteer Fire Department

• Westport Kiwanis Club

• Tree County Players

• Carousel Play and Learn Center.

A blood drive was also organized by Centra Credit Union and took place outside of the DCUF and the Decatur County Community Foundation offices. 

This additional opportunity to give back offered residents another meaningful way to support their neighbors and strengthen local health resources.
