(JUNEAU, AK) – The Coast Guard rescued two fishermen in Alaska after their vessel capsized this week.
A distress alert was put out near Juneau on Wednesday morning.
One nearby fishing vessel navigated toward the capsized boat when the found two fisherman in a life raft.
A Coast Guard helicopter showed up a short time later and hoisted the fisherman from the raft.
There were flown to Kodiak where one fisherman showed signs of hypothermia and a head injury, but both were listed as stable.
The Coast Guard says both occupants jumped ship when it began taking on water.
Sean Streyle is a Communications Unit Controller with the Coast Guard. He said, “This highlights the importance of mariners maintaining safety gear aboard their vessels. This and our close partnerships with the Alaska State Troopers and the good Samaritans were invaluable to the success of this rescue.”
