Whitewater Valley Railroad suffers severe damage, fundraiser launched

(CONNERSVILLE, Ind.) – One of many long-term impacts of the historic Whitewater River flooding is the damage caused to the nonprofit railroad system. 

The Whitewater Valley Railroad has been forced to suspend all operations after receiving significant damage to the track, engine shop and machines. 

Every traction motor in their inventory was submerged—including 22 active operational motors and 26 spares.

“Early estimates indicate that total damages will reach into the millions of dollars,” said Whitewater Valley Railroad vice president John Sprinkle. 

The Whitewater Valley Railroad has been in operation since 1867 and is now a volunteer-based nonprofit headquartered in Connersville and travels through Laurel and Metamora. 

The nonprofit was established to bring reliable transportation to the West Fork of the Whitewater Valley—taking on a challenge that had previously bankrupted both the canal company and the State of Indiana. 

“Facing the power of the river is part of our history, and today, it is our turn to rebuild. This time, however, the challenge extends far beyond typical washouts,” Sprinkle said.

The mission of the nonprofit is to preserve the historic branch line, restore vintage equipment, and provide educational programs for all ages.

“What makes this moment unique is that we get to decide when that day comes. With the support of our community, volunteers, and donors, we are ready to prove that the river will not win today—not on our watch,” Sprinkle added.
