Aurora firefighters return day after fire to help protect home

(AURORA, Ind.) – The Aurora Fire Department returned last night to the scene of a fire they had fought 24 hours before.

They didn’t show up with fire gear. They showed up with hammers and nails to help the family in a different way.

The firefighters volunteered their time to place plywood over the windows and doorways that were left open after the blaze.

When one of our neighbors suffers a loss we all feel it. This wasn't just about going back there to help, it was to let her and her family know they aren't alone. That’s just how we operate,” Aurora Fire Chief Jeff Lane told The 812.

Aurora was one of eight fire departments who responded to the house fire on Conwell Street

on Tuesday that led to a woman being briefly hospitalized for smoke inhalation while two pets were killed.

The fire chief was quick to mention that Gillman’s Home Center donated the plywood that was used to board up the home.

“There were also community members who showed up last night that boarded up the windows on the first floor,” Lane added.

The home was deemed a total loss and the family has fortunately been able to find temporary housing.

Lane also said that the Blake Haag Real Estate office is serving as the primary drop-off location for donations for the family. Here is what the family needs:
