Bill heads to Indiana Senate

(INDIANAPOLIS) – A bill authored by a local freshman state representative is being praised by one of Indiana’s two United States Senators.
Rep. Garrett Bascom (Lawrenceburg) wrote House Bill 1384 which would require a police officer who arrests a person to report it to federal authorities if there is probable cause that the person is in the United States unlawfully.
The measure passed the Indiana House of Representatives with bipartisan support on February 4 and is headed toward a Senate vote.
The bill is receiving praise from U.S. Senator Jim Banks who said there should be strong coordination between federal immigration enforcement and local police departments.
“After four years of a regime that intentionally encouraged an invasion on our border, these actions across multiple levels of government are the overlapping defense system our communities need in the fight against illegal immigration,” Senator Banks said.
The bill is currently being heard in a Senate committee.
