State Rep. Bascom's bill on illegal immigration reporting passes committee

Would require law enforcement officers to report noncitizens to ICE

(INDIANAPOLIS) – A bill authored by local State Rep. Garrett Bascom has passed out of a committee with bipartisan support.

House Bill 1393 would require a police officer who arrests a person to report it to federal authorities if there is probable cause that the person is in the United States unlawfully.

"In Indiana, we welcome anyone who wants to work, live and thrive in our local communities," Bascom said. "Unfortunately, some of these individuals who come to the United States are not here in good faith, and this common-sense bill would allow our local law enforcement agencies to help our federal government root out bad actors that have been arrested for crimes."

Rep. Bascom added that the bill could work in tandem with recent federal laws such as the Laken Riley Act.

The bill will now be headed the State House of Representatives for further consideration.
