(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – A Batesville family will be celebrating their 100th family reunion this weekend.
The Narwold family has been in the Batesville area for more than 170 years.
It can be traced back to Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Narwold who immigrated from Germany to Indiana in 1854.
He married Cartherina Barg in 1857 and they settled on a property near Ballstown, which is just outside of Batesville, and had several children.
The Narwold name is well-known in the Batesville area and there was one family member who had a unique call to service in World War II.
In 1942, Harold Narwold was playing baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system when he received his draft notice. The notice was received on the same day as his wedding!
Harold served under General George Patton and fought in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and in central Europe.
He earned numerous medals and returned to Batesville in 1945 where he worked at Union Furniture for the next 42 years. Harold also served on Batesville City Council. He passed away in 1994.
That is one of many stories that will be told during the 100th annual Narwold Family Reunion which will take place at Liberty Park on Sunday.
