Batesville funeral home recognized for 100 years of business

(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – A Batesville funeral home is being recognized statewide for their longevity and commitment to the community.

Meyers Funeral Home was one of 32 Indiana businesses to be recognized last week during the Century and Half Century Awards by Governor Mike Braun.

The origins of Meyers Funeral Home date back to the 1900’s when it was owned by Ed Zierer. 

Zierer once asked Walter Meyers if he could use his horses and wagon to carry caskets for funerals. 

That led Walter to attend mortuary school and the business changed to Zierer & Meyers Funeral Home in 1924. 

“Over time, funeral customs began to change. Families preferred to have the services and visitation at the local funeral home, rather than at their own residences. In the late 1930s, to make more room to accommodate these changes, Walter moved the business to his mother's house at 500 West Pearl Street,” stated the business. 

His son, Nelson, then took ownership and operated the funeral home for many years until the early 1990’s. 

After serving in the Navy, his son, Rodger, graduated from Mid America College of Funeral Service and joined the family business. 

Rodger and his wife, Taaron, continue to operate the business today while Logan Alloway serves as Funeral Director. It is located at 1150 State Road 46 in Batesville. 

The family says they were honored to receive the award that recognized a century of continuous ownership and community impact. 

“We are the community, and value the great people of Southeast Indiana, that’s why we’re always giving back and helping families by offering affordable options. We’re honored to provide funerals and cremations with dignity and compassion for over 100 years,” Taaron Meyers said. 

During the awards ceremony, Batesville Honoring Lives (formally Batesville Casket) and Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home were also recognized for 100 years of business. 

Pizza Haus in Batesville was honored for 50 years of business as well.
