(BATESVILLE, Ind.) – A Batesville hair salon has created a community initiative that benefits sailors who will be overseas for the holidays.

Amy Jo Siebert owns Hidden Beauty Salon on Huntersville Road and came up with the idea after hearing about the experiences of her cousin who serves in the Navy.

She's been collecting non-perishables and other support items and shipping them overseas.

“My heart is telling me to ask for help from the community because I know we as a community can come together and help,” Amy said.

Some commonly-requested items are beef jerky, canned goods, snacks, candy, packaged cookies, oatmeal gum, coffee, toiletries, trail mix, sunflower seeds, dried fruit, and protein bars.

You can even drop off a card or letter to thank them for their service, she added.

“Feel free to drop items off at the desk and if I’m not here or we’re closed, put it by the side door and I can bring it in,” Amy said.

Hidden Beauty is covering the shipping and has already mailed at least 12 boxes overseas.

They've also gotten some help from young customers as one boy volunteered after his haircut to help lift 5 shipping boxes and also drew a photo to send to the military members.

Another young girl helped write labels and package another shipment.

The salon is located at 2 North Huntersville Road in Batesville.
