Winter storm to bring accumulating snow, dangerous cold

Updated: 5 hours ago

(WESTPORT, Ind.) – The strong winter storm impacting much of the United States will arrive in Southeast Indiana on Saturday.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued from Saturday morning until Monday morning.

National Weather Service forecasters are currently predicting total snow accumulations between 7 and 11 inches.

The snow is expected to begin mid-day Saturday and last through early Monday.

It comes as temperatures drop Friday into the teens and single digits with wind chills below zero. Temperatures are expected to remain below 20 through the weekend.

Regardless of snow amounts, the cold ground will mean a modest snowfall will make driving conditions hazardous in a short period of time.

“If you do plan to travel in hazardous winter conditions, consider taking a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded,” National Weather Service forecasters said.

Winter Safety Tips

  • Slow down and adjust your speed to road conditions, especially on snow covered roads.

  • Know before you go – check conditions and forecasts before you hit the road; allow plenty of time to reach your destination safely.

  • Don’t crowd the plow – never tailgate or drive beside a snowplow.

  • Leave extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you; it takes extra time and distance to stop or slow down on snowy roads.

  • Prepare an emergency kit with snacks, water, a phone charger, sand or cat litter, flares or bright LED alternatives, a flashlight, and blankets or extra clothing.

  • Keep vehicles maintained – Keep your vehicle full of gas and check your battery, fluids and spare tire.

  • Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle’ s windows, lights, and signals.
